Behind on pace means your completed work sits below the line Edgenuity draws between your course start and target dates. It is not only cosmetic: it lowers your Actual grade, which counts unfinished work against you, while your Relative grade averages only what you submitted.
Most of the panic about Edgenuity comes from seeing two different grades and not knowing which one is real. They are both real, they measure different things, and the gap between them is exactly how far behind you are.

The two bars
The top bar is your progress, measured by time in the course rather than by lessons finished. The bar underneath is where you should be by today. Blue means on track, green ahead, red behind, and teachers look at both.
Actual grade versus Relative grade
Relative grade averages only the work you have submitted, so it flatters you when you are behind. Actual grade treats the work you have not reached as zeros to date. A wide gap between them is not two opinions, it is a measurement of how much is outstanding.
Which one your school uses
Schools choose which grade appears on the course tile, so the number you see first may be either. Opening the progress overview shows the rest, and it is worth knowing which one your report card will use before the end of a term.
Closing the gap
Because the pace line moves with the calendar, standing still puts you further behind each day even when nothing changes. The two grades converge only as the outstanding work gets finished, which makes the oldest untouched lessons the ones worth attacking first.
