How the number is worked out

When the answer is above 100
It means the target cannot be reached on the final alone, and it is better to know that now. What is left is any assignment still open, extra credit if the teacher offers it, and picking a target that is actually available. A calculator that quietly returned 112 would have told you nothing.
If your class uses category weights
Many courses weight by category rather than one flat final. Use the grade your gradebook currently shows and the weight your syllabus gives the final, and this holds. If the final sits inside a larger exam category, use that category weight instead.
