Your PowerSchool grade is not moving

Usually nothing is broken. The common causes are a teacher who has not entered the score yet, a manually overridden grade that no longer recalculates, a term already finalised so new work cannot move it, or a sync from a linked gradebook that runs on a delay.

Refreshing does not help, and that is the useful clue: the number is not stuck loading, it is accurately reporting something that has not changed yet. Each of the four causes leaves a different trace.

The score is not entered yet

By far the most common. Turning work in and having it marked are separate events, and the gap between them is usually days rather than minutes. Your assignment list will show the item with no score against it.

The grade was overridden by hand

A teacher can type a grade directly rather than let the gradebook compute it. Once that happens the number stops recalculating, so new scores land in the assignment list without moving the headline grade at all.

The term is finalised

After term grades are stored the figure is fixed, and work submitted afterwards does not move it. This is the usual explanation for a grade that has stopped responding near the end of a marking period.

A sync has not run

Where scores come from another gradebook, they arrive on a schedule rather than instantly. A grade entered in the other platform this morning may not appear here until its next sync.

What to do

Check the assignment list first, since it separates "not marked yet" from everything else, then ask a question specific enough to answer quickly.

  1. Open the course and look at the assignment rather than the overall grade
  2. If there is no score, it has not been marked yet and there is nothing to fix
  3. If the score is there but the grade did not move, the grade may be overridden or the term finalised
  4. Message the teacher naming the assignment and the date you submitted it

Questions

I turned it in but my grade did not change. Why?

Submitting and being graded are different events. Until a teacher enters the score, nothing moves. If the score is visible and the grade still has not changed, it may have been entered by hand or the term may be finalised.

How long does PowerSchool take to update?

It updates as soon as a score is entered. The delay you are seeing is usually the marking, not the software. Where grades sync from another platform, that sync runs on a schedule set by your school.

Can a teacher override my calculated grade?

Yes. A manually entered grade stops recalculating, so later assignments appear in the list without changing the total. It is a normal feature rather than a fault.

What should I say when I ask?

Name the assignment and the date you submitted it, and ask whether it has been marked. That turns it into a quick lookup rather than an investigation, and you get an answer sooner.
